Had a truly amazing day down at Lancing. I arrived late to find lots of others already blasting. It was pretty onshore with big swell pounding in, I thought it was 4.0m weather, but went with the 4.5m cos that's what everyone else was on, tsk tsk, I was soon back changing to the 4.0m. Nice big troughs out the back, bit of a chore getting through the inside whitewater, but all ok for an hour. The heavy rain came and that killed the wind a bit so my 4.0 was suddenly gutless. Rapid exit to the shore to avoid getting worked. Then it picked up and blew really hard, too much to launch again, even with the small sail, onshore shorebreak not a nice prospect. Watched and waited for ages, then popped back to the car to find that everybody had disappeared, no-one left at all. Still too windy, so derigged eventually and sat in the car to warm up.

And then it happened: at 11:45 the wind swung west and eased up a tadge and the sun came out. Rigged the 4.0m again and back to the water's edge. Massive shorebreak, but at least it was sideshore wind for a quick getaway. Took 5 minutes waiting then made it through. Sail was now perfect, comfortably powered up, big swell was still coming in well overhead. Turned into a big set and down the line on the huge face. This is Lancing proper. Ive always said that its best an hour before high tide, with a big storm swell and the wind swinging round to the west. Wave after wave, sh*tting bricks not to get caught in the shorebreak. The wind was cross off by the end, so waves were smooth and steep, perfect south coast stuff. The sun was shining and there where vast plumes of spray ballooning off the breaking waves. Pumped like a porn star to get back to the beach through the wind shadow without getting mauled. 1:15pm. Love it.

Been waiting a year or two for today.
